Business loans can be defined as money lent for a specified amount of time at a specific interest rate to a specific person or people that operate a business or plan to operate a business. How To Find Grants for Women Owned Businesses

The freedoms that we enjoy in the United States make it truly the “land Of Opportunity”. An entrepreneur can succeed in the United States, as long as they are willing to take a risk. The larger the risk the person is willing to take, the larger the reward. However, some people can go their entire lives without having a chance to take that risk. The government and private organizations give out millions of dollars in grants every year to entrepreneurs to help give them the ability to take a risk in order to make this country a better place to live. However many of these organizations appear to be hesitant to give a grant for women owned businesses. This might be true in many instances, but there are actually government grants and private foundations in the United States setup for the sole purpose of funding women owned businesses.

The government does not actually set aside very much money to fund grants for women owned businesses, but the government does have quite a few grants for minority owned businesses. Some people might not realize right away that these grants can easily be taken advantage of to help fund a women owned business. (more…)

The top reason a lot of businesses fail is poor management. This is closely followed by poor financing and lack of experience. Many people, not just women, go into business with more passion than business sense. Whatever path you choose, passion is important, but passion alone won’t pay your bills or replace your day job. You have to have a plan.

One thing we need to think about is whether our chosen business is one which has a high income potential. According to the Center for Women’s Business Research, there are more than 10.4 million businesses owned by women, but only 3% of all women-owned businesses earn revenues of over a million dollars compared to 6% of men-owned businesses.

On the other hand, according to All About Women Consumers, when women are provided with relevant information, they do more research and due diligence than men. They also tend to become millionaires younger than men and own the majority stakes in over half of privately owned businesses. (more…)

Unique Challenges for Women in Business

I’ve been in private practice for almost 10 years, now. I am living my dream; I do what I love to do, the hours I work are the hours I choose to work, and I can often take time off to play with my family or enjoy a friend, if I wish.

But, as most self-employed people, I’m a hard boss, and as a female small business owner, I have much more to do than just ‘work’. As I type this, I am also making lasagna so my husband has something he enjoys eating while I’m out of town for the next few days, working. I also need to fold the laundry that is in the dryer so I can take care of some last minute clothes I want to pack for my trip. Tomorrow I will get up a little earlier than necessary so I can get a quick workout in, then be sure I have my suitcase packed and in the car before I see my first client in the morning, because when I’m out of school, I will leave directly for the airport for my trip. During the trip, if I have all my studying for classes done, I can then start working on my articles and newsletter that will be due soon. I should have all my charting done for my clients before I leave tomorrow, too.

If you are in business for yourself, this probably sounds pretty familiar. If you are just starting out, yes, it sounds scary, and there definitely are days that you will wonder what the heck you are doing, but I am still here to tell you it’s all worth it. (more…)

In the world of business, women are considered to be a minority regardless of their race. Many government contracts and business arrangements require that a minimum percentage of business transactions be handled using minority owned businesses. For this reason, getting a business certified as woman-owned can be advantageous and open up new markets for goods and services. But, who offers certification and how does one get her business certified as woman-owned?

The Nation Women’s Business Owners’ Corporation (NWBOC) is the first organization to offer a certification program for woman-owned businesses. The NWBOC is a non-profit organization created in 1995 to provide assistance to woman business owners in competing for government and corporate contracts. Their Women’s Business Enterprise (WBE) certification program is one step in this process. (more…)
